Buying a Gypsy Jazz guitar. 1 Year, 5 Months ago Karma: 2
Hi, Congratulations on the new website.

I thought I would start a thread..

What would you look for in a gypsy guitar?

What woyld you look for when you can't actually try it before you buy it? (This seems to be the case especially in NZ)

I want to buy a gypsy guitar that will cost me as little as possible. (Who doesn't?) But of course in a playable condition.

Thanks.

I started having lessons with Keith Petch because Bob Heinz was too busy to teach me. But Keith is great.

Cheers mate

I need a guitar with quite a bit of volume as I am mainly playing acoustically.

I thing the Gitane D-500 are good value for money. The decibel dollar ratio is very good. The only drawback with the Gitane is that it is the shorter scale length and that makes the strings a bit loose to play on, so for soloing it lacks a bit of projection.

I have played on Duponts and Favinos and they have a huge amount of projection but are very pricey, some of the manouche guitars are nice to play and a bit mor reasonable

Unfortunately in NZ there is not a lot of choice so you have to think about importing one if you want something really nice.

Check out www.djangobooks.com
for some really nice guitars.

Cheers

Yes Keith is a great player, I am not sure if there is anyone else in ChCh other than those two. Might be wrong.

Hi I think the Cordoba is worth buying too, one of the guitarists at the recent workshop had on it sounded quite good, I think they are available in NZ, check your local music shop. Most of what is well priced and available can be researched here

shoppingcart.djangobooks.com/cat--Asian-...an-made-guitars.html

he has all the top of the line stuff too.
Cheers

This guitar certainly has the looks but I have not played it so I cannot comment on its sound and feel. I am submitting it as a suggestion for your research.

I'm quite new with gipsy jazz, I discovered it a few months ago when I recieved 3 cd's of Django Reinhardt for my birthday.
But I really love it and I'm thinking about buying a Gipsy guitar.
Can I find a reasonable gipsy guitar for less than €500 ?
Which models do you recommend?

Thanks for answering.

Re:Buying a Gypsy Jazz guitar. 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I have decided to explain my cryptic post regarding Rob Aylward so that forum members will be aware of what has happened to me.8 years ago Rob agreed to take back a US $4000.00 guitar he had built for me and replace it with another. It was a "gentleman's agreement"-no written contract, and I shipped him the original guitar. After 6 years of not providing me with the replacement guitar,he suggested that he return my original guitar to me.I gladly agreed and requested a price quote on the shipping. That was January 2008.Over two years later all I have gotten are periodic e-mails offering excuses as to why he hasn't been able to return my original guitar.I have been unable to get any e-mail response from him since February 11 of this year.
Caveat Emptor!

I have finally received an e-mail from Rob Alyward saying he will return my original guitar soon.I feel it is incumbent on me to let members know how this matter turns out, having disclosed this much already.
By the way it is an excellent guitar, regardless of its unfortunate history.
